Playful Poetry Workshop April 2021

Play With Words

Play With Words

The Importance of Play

There is a belief that play is only something children do, and that it is certainly not for adults. Yet, there are so many benefits to it, I believe there is a lot we older folk can learn by adding some play into our everyday lives. Indeed, taking time out to play allows us to switch off the logical side of our brain for a while and simply be imaginative. This so-called right-brain thinking frees us to think outside the box, and in doing so, come up with new ideas and possible solutions to problems. Play may occupy us in a myriad of ways - not only as a form of entertainment, but also as a distraction and coping method in certain moments. Most of all, being playful can boost our creativity. And this is what I propose for our upcoming workshop - to let go of rigid thoughts about who can be creative and embrace your inner poet!

The Workshop

Hence, this month's free interactive workshop invites you to play with words.

During the workshop, you will:

  • unwind and have fun while making international connections

  • write simple poems in small groups, pairs and on your own

  • take away a concept to apply in your personal or professional context

The Host

Born in London, and having spent a couple of years in the Caribbean as a child, a year in France while a university student and 6 years in China, has given me an international outlook and a love for different cultures and languages. As an English Language Teacher and Creative Writing enthusiast with a penchant for digital technology, I am always looking for ways to inject creativity into my online teaching sessions.

That has led to the creation of the Share Your Story With Confidence Community - check out the story behind it here - and a newly launched Creative Writing Club. The aim of the Creative Writing Club is to help us establish a regular creative reading and writing habit among peers. We will read lesser heard authors and add our own drafts to the Your Stories collection. Read more about that cool project here.

So if you like the sound of the Club and fancy a little taste of those creative vibes this week, then join our Playful Poetry workshop on Wednesday.
