Creative Practice with Charlynne Bryan - Poetry Prompt

Poet, Author, Facilitator & Educator, Charlynne Bryan.

About the Creative Practice Series

As you know, we are an international group of teachers with a passion for creativity who love learning with and from each other. As such, one of the main aims of this community is to spotlight and give a platform to our members. So that's where the idea of the Creative Practice series has come from - and that’s why I invited SYSWC member Charlynne to share her creative practice with you.

About Charlynne

Charlynne Bryan is a poet, author, facilitator and educator. Having started writing at a young age, she has written and published 3 poetry collections. Hailing from the island of Dominica, she is not only a talented artist but also a great storyteller, with a warm, bubbling Caribbean English accent that you will simply fall in love with!

About Her Poetry

As a self-confessed super-fan, I have all 3 of Charlynne’s poetry books: Dear fat girl: you are not broken (2019), Conversations before noon (2021) and Letters to my soul (2021). Each of the titles tackle and represent a different aspect and period of her life.

Charlynne enjoys poetry writing because it’s an opportunity to “let my thoughts flow on to the page and say exactly what is my emotion at the time.” That is, it’s a way to capture thoughts and feelings in the moment. And, of course, the written word becomes a permanent record which can be referred to periodically, or even shared with others.

About the Poetry Prompt

In her role as facilitator, Charlynne loves to encourage new writers to compose and share their writing. In this video, Charlynne reads two poems to us - one from her first collection, the other, called Home, from her last. And, choosing the theme of Home, she gives us a poetry prompt.

Share Your Writing!

Hopefully, her poetry reading and prompt will inspire you to put pen to paper to write about ‘Home’.

Check out the short 9-minute video below below and give it a go!

Do let us know if you write something, and if you are willing, please do send it in to shareyourstorywithconfidence@gmail.com as we would love to create a blog post with all of your entries.

November/December Creative Sessions

Finally, as the days become darker and the cold creeps in for winter, why not warm your creative juices up by participating in an online creative session next month? I’m full of ideas for the workshops - short story reading & discussion, brushing up storytelling skills, experimenting with digital tools - but what do you want to do?! I’ve set up a very short survey to help me design some cool experiences for you. Please take 2 minutes to complete it! Click here. Oh, and feel free to share with friends!
